Full Thickness Corneal Transplant: Medical Aspects

Kanjana KawinFebruary 22, 2022February 24, 2022

There are several medical remedies to various issues that are faced by humans. A common issue that affects humans is problems with the eyes. Eyes are being constantly used by everyone. Cataracts, infections to the eye membranes, etc are pretty common these days. Likewise, treatments for these issues are also available. One such example is a full-thickness corneal transplant.

Before surgery

The surgery is, of course, invasive. But it needs some preparations from the side of both patient and the doctor. Before the procedure, doctors explain all that will be done to the patient during the surgery in detail. Several small tests to check the patient’s condition to withstand the surgery may be done. If you are under any medication, the surgery should not be done promptly. The general health of the patient is quite important just before the procedure. Eliminating any infection before the surgery is essential. Doctors would probably advise any suitable drops to be put in the eye to keep inflammations at bay.

The patient receives local anesthesia to get through the procedure. The whole procedure would be completed within an hour. As soon as the anesthesia wears off, the patient can leave home.

After surgery

Post-surgery, you would be asked to wear eye patches for a few days. This would keep the area free of infections. The eye patch will help the spot heal without much fuss. Some patients have reported a feeling of soreness in the area of the insertion for a few days. There might be slight pain as well. But this will be gone in a few days. For some people, there would be absolutely no discomfort after the full thickness corneal transplant. The effect after the surgery depends on the person’s health and tolerance levels. Any inflammation that may occur is prevented by using eye drops prescribed by the doctor.

Like any other surgery, cornea transplant surgery should also be done with the utmost care. Choose a hospital that is reputed enough with doctors who are professionally trained and qualified to perform the surgery. This is quite crucial with respect to the health and wellness of the patient.
